Last year, Adobe announced Creative Cloud, a subscription-based offering that provides ongoing access to the latest versions of Adobe creative desktop applications and a cloud-based platform to make it easier to work across multiple devices and locations. Each Creative Cloud membership includes use of Adobe Creative tools, services, and applications, dedicated cloud storage space, and access to new features and products as soon as they are released. Adobe also announced that they will be phasing out physical copies of Creative Suite over the next year. Electronic downloads for Creative Suite products will continue to be available from OU IT Store.
The OU IT Store is working closely with Adobe to bring Creative Cloud offerings to departments on campus, and a number of small-scale pilots are currently in progress. See below for more information:
- Our current CLP agreement with Adobe will not end until August 2014–meaning departments will still be able to purchase single titles through the OU IT Store.
- Creative Cloud for Teams – This membership plan allows for departments and small teams to utilize group licensing and includes a set of web-based tools to centrally manage and deploy Creative Cloud. It is available now, but cannot be used in a lab environment. To request a license or to find our more information, contact Suzanne Goodspeed at 325-3144.
- Creative Cloud for Enterprise – This membership plan provides a more centrally managed, campus-wide offering. While this is the solution Adobe would like to see all educational institutions move towards, there are still a number of issues needing to be addressed before a full-scale enterprise offering is available at OU:
- Which Adobe applications will be licensed?
- How many licenses will be needed?
- How will departmental billing work?
- Creative Cloud Desktop Apps – This membership plan provides institutional access to the latest Creative Cloud applications through a one- or two-year Adobe Education Enterprise Agreement. However, it does not include Creative Cloud storage or services.

One of the problems that came up some years ago (and the reason why I did not upgrade to a newer version of Dreamweaver at that time) was exactly the question of departmental billing: there could be people in departments who do not want to pay for a product, but the individual staff member or faculty member might want to pay for that out of pocket. It sure would be nice if IT supported individual purchases through the IT Store online, in addition to departmental billing.
Laura – you can purchase an individual copy of Dreamweaver. If you purchase it individually, it is actually the student version (but exactly the same as the departmental version). The OU IT Store has this version in stock and available for purchase. You just need to ask for the student version of Dreamweaver. I hope that helps.
OH: that is really good news!!! When I tried to do that maybe three or four years ago, it was not possible. THANK YOU: I think I know what toy I will be playing with over the holidays. I really appreciate it!

Just speaking for myself, if I had access to Dreamweaver as a desktop app through a Creative Cloud site license arrangement, I would make very good use of it. I largely stopped doing website development when my very old Dreamweaver just would not run anymore on my Mac. That was a few years ago; I have been using only free hosted solutions to develop new content in the interim. I would be delighted to get back in the game if we had access to Dreamweaver.
